Broccoli Slaw with Buttermilk Dressing

I love all greens... except celery. (It's a horror story. You don't want to know about it.) But it wasn't always that way. When I was a kid, I caused many tense moments at the dinner table as I refused to eat my greens... sorry mum and dad.  But now, I really adore all greens... and broccoli would have to be one of my favourites... and this would have to be one of my favourite ways to eat broccoli.  Green Goodness - give it to me. (I think my eight-year-old-self would slap me right now.)

Broccoli Slaw with Buttermilk Dressing
slightly adapted from Smitten Kitchen
Serves 4

For the Slaw:
2 head of broccoli, trimmed and chopped into large pieces
1/2 cup sliced natural; almonds, toasted
1/2 cup dried sour cherries
1/2 red onion, finely chopped

For the Buttermilk Dressing:
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup low fat Greek yoghurt
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon sugar

Make the Slaw:
Fix the slicer blade to a food processor and slice the broccoli. Or slice very finely by hand.

Put the broccoli, almonds, sour cherries and red onion into a large salad bowl.

Make the Buttermilk Dressing:
Whisk all the ingredients together in a small bowl, seasoning well with salt and pepper.

Pour the dressing over the slaw and toss.

  1. I love broccoli too (and celery is the only green I don't like):) Must try this!

  2. A market by my house makes a salad just like this, and I pick up containers of it for quick lunches ALL the time. Going to try homemade now, though!

  3. Tried this as soon as I got the smitten kitchen cookbook and it is now one of my favourite salads. It's really good.

  4. I simply love, love, love this salad. And the only way my parents would ever get me to eat anything green involved copious amounts of cheese sauce. But it worked! I think I'm still trying to work off the cheese sauce tho, so maybe not so much.. :) Beautiful photos Jennifer.

  5. Oh Jen, I do love this salad too, it's my fav raw green food ! But I'd love to try your dressing, sounds so beautiful, gorgeous photography once again x

  6. Hey Sara. You're going to love this. It's good to know I'm not the only one who can't abide celery... blurghhh

  7. Hey Little Kitchie. This is so easy and absolutely delicious. This was meant to serve 4 and I just about ate the lot on my own... I know you find that hard to believe.

  8. Hey B. I love Smitten Kitchen. So delicious, so reliable.

  9. Hehe Pink Patisserie - I think it's an adults right of passage to have to raise a child who won't eat their greens. Cheese sauce makes everything better - I'm still using it as a vehicle for the veggies.

  10. Thanks Shez. You'll love this if you love raw broccoli. I eat vats of the stuff. The dressing is a winner. You can use it to dress warm potatoes or over a green salad.

  11. Uhh I didn't even see this recipe yet! Will try to make something similar this week, just without almonds - the boy is allergic to all things that are nuts....

  12. Hey Johanna. This will be lovely without the almonds. May be you could add some fried breadcrumbs for crunch instead.
