In My Kitchen - August 2014

Here's what's happening in my kitchen at the moment...

Pepita Spread:

I've waxed lyrical about Mayver's Peanut and Cacao Spread in a previous In My Kitchen post. Now it's time for me to bang on ad nauseum over their latest offering, this gloriously green Pepita Spread. I want to spread it on my toast, put it in my hummus, make dressings with it, add it to my smoothies and dip Ritz crackers in it straight from the jar. Not that I know anything about how good that last option is, she says as she wipes the Ritz cracker crumbs and Pepita Spread from her lips. *wink*

Poh's Same Same but Different:

My husband took me shopping and asked me to choose a cookbook. I couldn't resist Poh's newest book.  I've traveled through Asia a lot, so the title alone makes me smile. I can't wait to try her Lazy Day Noodle Soup, Shredded Spiced Pork and Coconut Relish Pocket, Tuna Nashi Carpaccio with Mandarin Dressing, Hazelnut Potatoes, Mini Coffee and Almond Pavlovas, Gluten-Free Jaffa Almond Cake... actually scratch that, I want to make every recipe.

Fresh Rainbow and Hot Smoked Trout from Goulburn River Trout:

My friends from Goulburn River Trout sent me some fabulous fresh rainbow trout and hot smoked trout. I made some deeeelicious Smoked Trout and Potato Empanadas. Stay tuned to find out what I make with the fresh trout. Thanks to Seafood Industry Victoria for hooking me up... get it, hooking me up. Hoooo boy!

Takujo Sashimi Shoyu:

I'm heading to Japan in the next few months so I've been doing quite a bit of "research" on the cuisine, as you can imagine. I dipped some of the aforementioned raw rainbow trout into some of this Takujo Sashimi Shoyu and was transported to heaven. I love, love, love Japanese food. Okay, I love ALL food, but I really do LOVE Japanese food and will find any excuse to buy bottles of delicious Japanese condiments. Plus, I'm just a little bit in love with Japanese packaging.

Mortar and Pestle:

Winter means lots of curries at our house, so my mortar and pestle gets quite a work out (not to mention my biceps and triceps). It's a win-win, I get knock-out curry pastes and guns to die for.

Anyway, that's my kitchen for now.

    1. Hey Liz. You'll find Mayver's products in Coles and Woolworths where the "Health Food" and gluten free products are. I got the Takujo Sashimi Shoyu from an Asian supermarket. It's so good.

    1. My husband has a conditioned response to the cookbook section. He knows I'm not coming out with one and he's learned to accept that. I love Poh too. Her book is so good. Yes, a trip to Japan. Can't wait.

    1. I think the Pepita Spread is new. It's the first time I've seen it. It's really yummy. I though it might be slightly strong tasting (don't know why), but it's not. It's really nutty. A bit like tahini, but may be a little sweeter.

    1. Thank you. The Pepita Spread is really yummy. I will be trying in recipes that usually call for tahini to see how it fits. It's a little sweeter tasting that tahini, but has a similar flavour profile.

  8. I love Japanese packaging too. I look forward to future posts about your experiences in Japan. I love the Mayver's products I have tried. We can't get all of their range here in Alice yet. Just had a spoonful of their crunchy peanut butter. I learned that nasty little habit from my Grandma. No double dipping though! Thanks for sharing your kitchen with us!

  12. Ooh...lucky you heading to Japan. We hope to go next year so I like the idea of 'research'. I'm loving the sound of that Mayvers spread. I use pepitas a lot and of course, am a big fan of Mayvers so what's not to love? I'll have to look out for it. Cheers xx

  14. I haven't eaten trout in years - we always enjoyed it cooked with bacon, lemon leaves and flaked almonds. I would love a bigger pestle and mortar - things keep jumping out of mine because it is too small. Thanks for a peek into your kitchen.
    Have a super day.

  15. Love everything in your post, Jennifer! We adore smoked trout here, and that pepita spread looks good enough to eat by the spoonful. My sister picked up Poh's book as well when she was here - I should have snuck a look at it before she left, as it sounds fabulous! And how stunning is that Japanese bottle! x
