In My Kitchen - April 2015

Here's what's happening in my kitchen at the moment...

Apples:

It may be a full time job to keep the parrots from eating your apples all through growing season. You may curse the parrots and the apples and just about every thing else while you're sweating and swearing in the heat of the summer sun wrestling a bird net over the branches. But it's so worth it when you bite into a crisp, slightly sweet, slightly tart delicious orb freshly plucked from the tree. My kitchen is strewn with bowlfuls of them.

Flan Rings:

I've had a hankering for some flan rings for ages and now that my flan ring craving is satisfied, I'll be coveting some other baking paraphernalia quite soon I suspect.

Garden Honey:

Honey is special to me. I don't know if it's the industry of the bees or the love and dedication of the people who produce it that I have a soft spot for... probably both. I received this pot of golden nectar from one of my husbands work colleagues whose mother is local bee keeper. I made this delicious Honey, Apple and Pecan Loaf with Whipped Honey Butter, affirming my love of all things honey.

bon appétit Desserts:

Delicious and dangerous - one of my favourite combinations.

Fowler Ware Jug:

I couldn't resist this retro piece for my kitchen.

Miso Bowls:

I actually bought these gorgeous wooden miso bowls when I was in Miyajima, Japan in October-November last year, but have been using them a lot lately as the weather is starting to cool down and be more conducive to miso-soup-sipping. They are just about a permanent fixture on my kitchen bench, work desk, coffee table... just about any flat surface.

Sourdough Starter - Demi, Daughter of Priscilla:

I was lucky enough to receive a gift of the famous sourdough starter Priscilla from Celia of Fig Jam and Lime Cordial. I've named her Demi and she is a lively little thing. I see great, crusty loaves in my near future.

Anyway, that's my kitchen for now.

  1. At least I don't have to worry about parrots eating our apples (though I am having trouble with crows carrying away the duck eggs). This is one of the things I love about IMK - the fact that everywhere is so different. Love the little miso bowls.

  2. Hooray for Demi! And oh, how glorious it must be to have homegrown apples! Definitely something we can't grow well here with our frost-free winters. I love how your flan tins are in different colours! :)

  3. I love those little miso bowls. So cute and a great memory of your travels, every time you use them. I'm a bit keen on those flan rings too. They look almost like bracelets from Tiffany. A truly tasty tour.

  6. Jennifer, how satisfying it must be to pick your own apples. Well done in beating the birdies. I will have to research how to use those flan rings, they look very interesting! Cheers, Kirsty xx

  12. I can't wait to see what you are going to do with all those lovely apples and hello.. whipped honey butter, how delicious. I'm going to be trying out your cake too. Bee Kind Honey is a cute name. Loving the retro jug too.

  13. What a great name for the honey - and to know that someone's Mum made it too makes it pretty special. The miso bowls are beautiful too - the Japanese certainly have an eye for aesthetics don't they - something so simple and functional yet beautiful. Thanks for the peek in your kitchen this month.

  15. That's a lovely bubbly starter. Mine is similar, but I wonder if it will be harder to get it going now that winter is on its way.

  16. I love everything in your kitchen, but especially the little miso bowls. I am having trouble signing in with wordpress on blogger sites, so this comment will probably revert to an ancient blog I had in 2009. Annoying, but Blogger and Wordpress aren't relating lately.

  20. Hoorah, welcome to the extended global family of Priscilla descendants!
I adore your miso bowls, just gorgeous. I loved our visit to Miyijima a few years ago, though I didn't do any shopping there. I so long to get back to Japan again soon. We went in 2012 and again a year later but not since autumn 2013. :-(

  21. I love your home grown apples and the honey, and that Fowler jug is a real classic - lovely! I’m interested by the wooden miso bowls, are they lacquered inside?

  22. How wonderful, all those apples! Do you have plans to make apple butter? The Fowler jug is lovely, jugs have so many uses...from flowers to sauce. Love them especially the old ones with history.
