In My Kitchen - October 2015

Here's what's happening in my kitchen at the moment...





Citrus:

If you're a regular reader of my blog, then I've probably bored you to tears already with my harping on about all the citrus fruit I've got at the moment.  If not, you'll most likely have tears of boredom in your eyes by the end of this post.  Yes, I grow a lot of citrus.  St. Clement's has nothing on me.




Blood Orange Juice:

Like I said, I've got citrus, citrus everywhere. On every flat surface and in every basket, bowl and box.  Bored yet?



Jersey Cream:

Jersey Cream from a local farm.  I see scones in my near future... probably orange scones topped with Orange and Vanilla Bean Marmalade and a big dollop of this lush cream.  (The irony that the bottle of cream has an orange lid is not lost on me.)  Or it could easily adorn a thick slice of my Lemon, Coconut, Sour Cream Cake (Lemons for a break from the oranges... just to mix things up a bit.)




"00" Flour:

I have bags and bags of this fine grade Italian flour in my larder.  Can't live without the stuff.




Ravida Extra Virgin Olive Oil:

According to the website this "award winning house blend recognized as “one of the best olive oils in the world” is an elegant, perfectly balanced oil with aromas of medium ripe tomato, freshly mown hay and lemon blossom."  See, just can't get way from citrus.




The Snacking Dead:

I've had this book for a while, but we recently started watching a new season of The Walking Dead so the cookbook has made an appearance in my kitchen again.  With recipes like Angel of Death Brown Sugar Bacon Bites, Cat Head Biscuits with Sawmill Gravy, Gory Red Grinders and Guac and Load Guacamole, how could I resist?  There are times when a girl just needs a parody in a cookbook (and a break from BLOOD oranges... sorry).  




Old Glass Jug:

This was my Mother In Law's jug.  She never used it, it was always stuck in a cupboard somewhere.  I inherited it and now I fill it with juice (blood orange, what else?) every chance I get.  And when I do, I think of her.

Okay, you can wake up now.

  2. Ha lucky you with all of that citrus. You cant get a better flour than Mulino Caputo, for sure. The picture of the jug at the bottom of this post is just beautiful. I kept staring at it.

  3. Jen, your post is so beautifully coloured! I love all the bright oranges - in fact I decided yesterday that it was my colour for this season. Do you make jelly? For some reason that came to mind when I looked at your photos! :)

  4. Hi Jennifer. Don't feel bad. I just threw bucket loads of citrus into the compost bin. What can you do with it all? I have 4 lemon trees :(

  8. Jennifer, I could never tire of citrus with the vibrant and fun way you presented it. (LOL, my next recipe up to try is Orange Chicken!) So glad you're putting that beautiful, long neglected jug to use. Enjoy your "Snacking Dead" adventures, too! :)

  10. Such vibrancy, such wonderful colour and such a light filled post with just a hint of citrus. We too just love blood oranges, and the kitchen looks like a scene out of Dexter when we cut them up and juice them ;) I am envious of your cream from a local farm. I am drooling at the sound of orange scones with orange and vanilla marmalade and fresh cream, serious yummers!

  11. I'm envious of the citrus. My citrus just seems to be a hotspot for grasshoppers to gather and munch. They're the giant ones and they are impervious to everything I've tried.

    That cookbook... hahahah, the names alone sound glorious!

  12. Could never tire of citrus! I'm counting down now the last of the oranges on our tree, will miss our fresh juice very morning. I'm a bit jealous of the blood oranges. I have a tree but it's not performing too well. That jug is spectacular, good to see you using it. Love Mirandadale Dairy stuff, been getting it a Wgl Farmers Market regularly. Cheers, :)

  15. I use bucket loads of citrus, is there such a thing as too much? I agree with everyone else about your MIL's glass jug, it looks fab full of juice, use it and enjoy...

  23. Mr Tiffin is very excited at the news of Jersey cream in Australia. He dreams of the clotted creams of Devon and found some in the Barossa earlier this year. We certainly aren't likely to see either up our way but it can go on the list for future road trips. Beautiful jug too.

    I too have been boring readers with clever ways to use blood oranges. I think we should start a support group…

  25. that jug of juice is just beautiful - I was never a citrus person but I try to appreciate it - actually I have got some lemons from a friend that is destined for lemonade - just in time for some hot weather - do you grow your own blood oranges - I love them but never know what to do with them
